Garden fans and everyday explorers alike will love discovering the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Garden – a hidden gem that’s found in the busy heart of central Wilmington. Located along Independence Blvd., and close to both Downtown Wilmington and the coastal communities of Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach, this unique little garden features an array of colorful carnivorous plants that are unique to the Cape Fear region, and which are truly one-of-a-kind and eye-catching additions to the local landscape.
Visitors can reach the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Garden via the Cross City Trail or by parking at the adjacent Edwin A Alderman Elementary School. The garden is fairly small, and is just .75 acres in size or so, but it is cluttered with a wide variety of carnivorous plants, like Venus Fly Traps, Pitcher Plants and Sundews, which are all surprisingly all native to the Cape Fear area. Visitors can follow the line of stepping stones to breeze through the invitingly colorful garden, or can enjoy the scene from the ADA accessible wooden observation decks and concrete walking trail. A breath of fresh air in the bustling center of Wilmington, the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Garden is a relaxing (and free) destination for Wilmington locals and visitors alike.
