Vacation rental tips and tricks:

When to book a Wilmington, NC rental & When to go:

  • The earlier you can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are booked early. Booking your rental property six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
  • Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. To get the best value, consider shifting your vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Some property managers offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Property managers frequently offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Look for your local Wilmington, NC area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have money saving offers on nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

How to select the perfect vacation rental in the Wilmington, NC area:

  • Choose a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and choose a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Color Me Mermaid-Great Ocean View, 2min walk to beach, Private Pool, Elevator, has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible online. If they are not listed, email or call the host before booking the property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish what bed configuration is best for your vacation family.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the owner about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking

More considerations for your visit:

  • We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let thieves ruin your holiday.
  • Document any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a terrific source for finding the best local spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a wonderful stay? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
