Wilmington visitors who love a good sports outing, exhibition, or a grand scale performance will want to check out what’s on the schedule at the renowned Legion Stadium. Home of the Wilmington Hammerheads soccer team, and serving as a venue for a number of community-wide events, this stadium is a posh addition to the local sporting scene, and a fun destination for sports fans and event-goers alike.
The stadium is located just south of the heart of Downtown Wilmington and was originally built in the 1930s, (though it has undergone extensive renovations over the ensuing decades, including a massive one in 2011.) While it remains the long-term home of the USL soccer team the Wilmington Hammerheads, and is therefore a well-known destination for soccer fans, the venue plays host to a number of musical performances or major exhibitions throughout the year. The stadium has 6,000 visitors’ seats, (including 40 handicapped seats), a 4-acre parking lot, and multiple areas for concessions and restrooms. With a sunny locale that’s just a few blocks away from the Cape Fear River and close to Greenfield Lake, the stadium is an attractive outdoor venue throughout the year, which only adds to its appeal to sports lovers and event ticket holders alike.
