On January 15, 1865, the Cape Fear region was the site of one of the most important Civil War battles along the North Carolina coastline, the Battle of Fort Fisher. This milestone event will be celebrated as part of the North Carolina First in Freedom Festival, with a week-long series of events from February 21–28, 2026, and major on-site commemorations at Moores Creek National Battlefield from February 26–28.
