Tips to get the optimal vacation home experience:

Getting the most from your spending budget:

  • The sooner your group can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best rental properties are booked very early. Reserving your rental 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your rental home.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Wilmington, NC area. To find the best value, consider changing your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer special rates for veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites frequently offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Many management companies supply Wilmington, NC area visitor guides that include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Wilmington, NC area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to pick the perfect vacation rental:

  • To start, have your family decide on the best dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Beach cottage located on a natural canal- 4 bedroom has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is generally available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property management company before you reserve the home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your vacation group.
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or may be applied to your agreement.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Additional considerations:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few issues.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • To make certain no damages are attributed to your stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas during arrival. Get in touch with the host immediately to report any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to make sure you haven't leave anything behind. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a terrific vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
