Strategies to get the perfect vacation rental experience:

Getting the most from your vacation rental budget:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. Booking your Wilmington, NC vacation rental in the Fall or Spring is an excellent way to save on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Wilmington, NC vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Owners sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers frequently offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Wilmington, NC visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

How to select the best rental home in the Wilmington, NC area:

  • Select your vacation dates and budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Sumter Avenue, Carolina Beach, NC The Family Beach House has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Wilmington, NC rentals search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the property owner before you reserve the property. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out what is right for your group.
  • If there's a specific Wilmington, NC attraction you are crazy about, look for homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all required amenities are included before booking
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the owner about allowable pet guidelines before booking.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Get the host's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
  • At Check-in, document any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Record all coorespondence.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
  • Be a good neighbor. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, take video of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a fantastic vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
