How to book the best rental experience:

Sticking to a budget:

  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are high season in Oak Island. To get the best value, try shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites typically offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, visitor guides have coupons for nearby tours and attractions.

Finding the best vacation rental in the Wilmington, NC area:

  • Choose vacation dates and budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. 14 Us: Oceanfront Home with Kayaks, Horseshoe Pit and More Close to Pier has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Wilmington, NC rentals search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is regularly accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property owner before you reserve the home. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Does your family require unique amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Tips to have a great stay:

  • Take a copy of the host's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents many issues.
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Document any issues with the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Double-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and look for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the host is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a fantastic vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
