Our top Oak Island rental booking tips:

Getting the best value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Wilmington, NC area. Booking in the Fall or Spring is a good way to save money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Wilmington, NC vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • The earlier you can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked very early. Booking your rental home up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your vacation rental.
  • Some property managers offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Property management companies typically offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Look for your local Wilmington, NC visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines have offers and deals for local accommodations, tours and attractions.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Select a group leader, select your vacation week, and choose a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Allegra: Dog-Friendly Home with Modern Kitchen \/ Baths and Easy Beach Access has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally available online. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before you reserve your rental. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is best for your vacation.
  • If there's an individual Wilmington, NC beach you crave, keep an eye out for homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental
  • If your family is traveling with pets, filter your search for a property that allows animals. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.

During your stay:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property. Store the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Record any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your peace. Apply the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would have never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all belongings. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property managers rely on good ratings to propel more bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
