BEST FEATURES!

Centrally located and close to the Maritime Market
Private crofter access
Entirely supplied kitchen
2 screened in porches

The Fortress of Solitude is our family's private getaway in the Maritime Forest on remote and handsome Bald Head Island. It is our home away from home and where we feel the most casual. We know you will, too. Centrally located on the island, you can take a 5 min. walk (kids or groceries fit well in the wagon) to the Maritime Market for breakfast or groceries or a 3 min. cart ride to one of the convenient, handsome, and empty beaches.
This new home looks like a Pottery Barn dream home. It features an open kitchen and living area. The kitchen has striking granite countertops, bespoke cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. We pride ourselves on how well-supplied the kitchen is - equipped for most any prepare, and the dining room is bright and roomy. The living areas have beautiful bamboo floors. The master bedroom with king bed is also on the main living level. The bath features tile and granite with a enormous walk-in shower. Upstairs are two additional bedrooms, one queen and one with two full/twin bunk beds, plus a bathroom and full-size laundry. The crofter has a fourth queen bedroom and a full bath with its own private entrance, ideal for any Cousin Eddie in your life. Two great screen porches - one dining, one calming - give you choices in outside fun while still wearing your bedroom slippers. As described in more detail below, we have two golf carts, and a number of non-motorized transport options, including adult bicycles, kid bicycles, and a younger kid's scooter.
The Fortress of Solitude will also appeal to the entertainment enthusiast in the family. It features a huge flat screen TV in the living room, complete with surround sound, a pair of speakers on each porch, AirPlay, a blu-ray player, and Wifi throughout the home and crofter. There are plenty of blu-rays or DVDs to choose from, but feel complimentary to bring your favorites with you. There are additional TVs in the master bedroom and also the crofter. We are Dish Network people, and you'll appreciate the viewing choices - never miss the game with the whole home DVR that accepts you to watch a recorded show on any of the TVs.
More than the cooks and home theater lovers among us, this home is made for kids. The bunk room upstairs has two sets of bunk beds, a modest table and chairs, buckets of legos, blocks, cars, brio trains, puzzles, books, and dolls. There are even a couple of empty toy buckets made just for the toys from home of the more organized youngsters among us. Pack n play and highchair are de rigeur. The kitchen sports kids plates, cups, and cutlery; there are loads of kids movies to watch and stacks of family games in the hall closet. The garage has kids bicycles, wagons, beach toys, kites, a scooter, and other outdoor toys. And, did we fail to mention the family of miniature lizards who like to sun on the outside decking? Hours of enjoyment. In short, relax... the half of your trunk you devote to non-essential kids' stuff when you go on vacation - leave it at home.
Spend pleasant days outside on the porches - one with comfortable seating for a morning coffee or afternoon wine glass and one dining porch that also features additional cooler space. Deer, birds and osprey have been spotted from the porches, so keep your eyes peeled.
There are two four person golf carts for exploring the island. There are adult bicycles for 'splorin', short for exploring, a favorite Island activity. There are also beach chairs and a beach umbrella.
If you prefer, you can arrange your rental to include temporary membership at the Bald Head Island Club, which features a fun and serene pool (imagine water slide AND comfortable sun chairs), top of the line tennis facilities, and the exercise center. There is a new splash pad playground, Also in the Summer, Club activities for kids are a highlight, and the club dining options are ideal for mid-vacay date nighttime or dressy family brunch. We simply pass the weekly temporary membership fee directly on to you as the renter, if you choose. If not, there are miles of beaches waiting for some bare feet and numerous other eateries to choose from - Mexican cantina, anyone?
The Fortress is our family home, and we have decorated and outfitted it as such. It is not a rental. It is most assuredly your relaxing home away from home in a beautiful and nearly magical setting. Come discover (or 'splore) it.

Tips to get the best Bald Head Island rental home experience:

How to get the best rental home value:

  • To find the largest vacation home for your budget, we suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular Wilmington, NC attractions.
  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Wilmington, NC area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

How to pick the best vacation home in the Wilmington, NC area:

  • To start, have your group select vacation dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Welcome to Fortress of Solitude has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is normally available on booking websites. If not, contact the property owner before you reserve your home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out which bed configuration is optimal for your family.
  • Is your group looking for unique amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you must book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.

More considerations:

  • Add the property manager's phone number to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Note any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if damages are assessed.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and scan for damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the host isn't available, take photos of the rental to record its condition.
  • Leave feedback! Hosts rely on great reviews to drive more bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
